  • Do I need to register my travel through the U-M Student Travel Registry?
    • You are required to register using the Travel Registry system if traveling independently. For students participating in a faculty-led or exchange program, you will be registered automatically.
  • How do I search and apply for programs in M-Navigator?
  • What happens when I log in to the system?
    • Upon your first/initial login, you will be asked to confirm you are setting up a profile in M-Navigator. Information about you from the university database will automatically be pulled in. After confirming (selecting yes) you will be presented with the application.
    • If you are logging in for a subsequent time, in order to access an existing application, after you login, look for the ‘Applications’ section of the page, then click on the name of the program to access your application or registration. 
  • My password isn’t working. What should I do?
    • If you are a UM-Dearborn student, you should use your uniqname and UMICH password to log in. If you need help resetting your UMICH password, you can find that on the following site: U-M Dearborn students
    • If you are not a UM-Dearborn student, you should log in using the email address used to create your account or application and the password you chose when setting up your account. If your account was created for you and you did not set up a password and security questions within 3 days, your temporary password will expire. Please email sa-umdearborn@umich.edu for help.
  • I already started an application. How do I return to it?
    • Click on the 'Login' button at the very top right of this page and follow the directions there.  
    • Once you have logged in, in the ‘Applications’ section of the page, then click on the name of the program to access your application or registration. 
  • I submitted a questionnaire and something is wrong or missing. What should I do?
    • As long as your application is not yet under review, we can "unreceive" a questionnaire, which will allow you to log back into the system, fix the error, and re-submit it. Please email sa-umdearborn@umich.edu and identify the name of the questionnaire that needs to be reset.
  • Can I apply for multiple programs in the same term?
    • You may apply to multiple programs in the same term.
  • Can I commit to multiple programs in the same term?
    • The system settings only allow applicants to commit themselves to a maximum of 2 applications in a given term. However, if you wish to commit to 3 or more applications, email sa-umdearborn@umich.edu.
  • Will the credits count towards my degree?
    • To know if credits will count toward your degree, you will need to meet with your academic advisor.  
  • When are financial aid awards announced?
    • Financial aid awards, such as the Go Global Scholarship, are often awarded one month prior to travel. 
  • What financial aid is available?
    • There are three main pools of financial aid:
      • Need-based scholarships
      • Internal Tuition Scholarships
      • Federal Aid

  • Are there any additional scholarships the school provides?
    • At this time, there are program-specific scholarships available for ISPM: Italy and Canada: Political Internship. Applications for these scholarships are embedded within the program application. Please note that these scholarships are managed by the department of their respective college and are typically awarded one month before travel.
  • What is the application process?
    • For all programs accepting applications, there will be an “Apply Now” button on the upper left hand side of the page. From here, you will complete your pre-decision application which is routed to the Study Abroad Support Team for review. Review requirements vary based on the program. 
    • Once accepted, students will receive a post-decision application to complete before departure. Additionally, students are required to pay a $300 deposit to secure their spot in the program four months before the semester of their trip begins.
  • Should I meet with a financial aid advisor?
    • We encourage all students to meet with their Financial Aid Advisor throughout the application process. Unfortunately, the Study Abroad Support Team does not have access to the information necessary to create a holistic picture of the funds that a student may or may not have available.

  • Should I meet with my academic advisor?
    • We encourage students to meet with their academic advisor as soon as possible to ensure credits will count towards a student’s degree. 
  • Can I still participate in a trip even if the credits won’t count toward my degree?
    • Yes, students can study abroad even if the credits will not count towards their degree.You will still be required to enroll in the course. However, please note that financial aid is not available in these situations.
  • How do I schedule my required Health and Safety Abroad Orientation?
    • You can select a date for your Health and Safety Abroad Orientation in your post-decision application. These sessions are held in-person in the Ford Collaboratory on the 1st floor of the Mardigian Library.
  • Will I need a visa for my trip?
  • Does the program I participate in have to be related to my major?
    • No, students can participate in programs outside of their major so long as there is no major-specific requirement. However, it is important that the credits count toward your degree if financial aid is needed.
  • Can I participate in multiple study abroad programs during my time at UM-Dearborn?
    • Yes! Students can participate in as many trips as they desire so long as all requirements are met.
  • Will courses be taught in English?
    • All programs are taught in English unless explicitly stated otherwise.
  • Where is the study abroad office located?
    • We are located in the Ford Collaboratory on the 1st floor of the Mardigian Library. If you would like to schedule an appointment, please read through our list of FAQs first. If you still have questions, complete this form to request an appointment.
  • What kind of trips are offered?
    • There are three types of program offered at UM-Dearborn:
      • Faculty-led programs are led by a faculty member from the University of Michigan-Dearborn who plans the program. Students often spend most of their time with the faculty member in class or on group excursions though some free time is allotted for student exploration as well.
      • Exchange programs are formal agreements between UM-Dearborn and another university to host students from their respective schools. These programs are typically longer, ranging from one semester to a full academic year and are less structured than a faculty-led program. 
      • Third-party programs are vetted programs provided by external companies to offer students more opportunities to study abroad. 
  • How will I know if my application is accepted?
    • Once accepted, M-Navigator will send an automated email notifying you of the update. In the event that more information is needed, someone from the Study Abroad Support Team will contact you directly.
